In your amanda user crontab, is this what you have?
time time * * * /usr/local/sbin/amcheck -m DailySet1

The lowercase -m causes it to send an email only if it cannot find 
the tape it needs next.  Otherwise its silent.

And probably restateing the obvious, make sure that mailto: is a 
valid user.
