Does your kernel include "device sa"?

Your tape should be recognized as /dev/.*sa[0-9]

For instance :

Waiting 5 seconds for SCSI devices to settle
sa0 at ahc0 bus 0 target 5 lun 0
sa0: <HP C1533A 9503> Removable Sequential Access SCSI-2 device 
sa0: 10.000MB/s transfers (10.000MHz, offset 8)
sa1 at ahc0 bus 0 target 10 lun 0
sa1: <SEAGATE AIT 03j0> Removable Sequential Access SCSI-2 device 
sa1: 20.000MB/s transfers (10.000MHz, offset 15, 16bit)
