Joseph,
Depends on how much data you are backing up, and how long a backup window you
have.
We regularly backup 30 gigabytes overnight from a variety of clients.
If you do file transfers you should already have a fair idea how fast your
network is.
Adsm will not be any faster than file transfer.
How much slower it will be depends on a lot of factors, principally cpu & memory
at both client and central server end, and the number of files you are backing
up..
You will get better ADSM performance if the data you are backing up is a a few
large files than if you are backing up thousands of small files.
I would only advise client compression where you have a powerful client box, and
your network is really constrained enough that it cannot handle the uncompressed
data throughput.
We have done tests in the past which showed that we got faster throughput for
the majority of our clients without compression, but you really need to test in
your own environment.
Good luck, hope this helps.
John

We are planning on using TSM for our slow wan links. How many people are or
have had luck backing up over slow wan links, and what about compression on
the client side.
