I have 2 7337 libraries and have the clean issue with the older one.
We have upgraded the microcode and notice the same effect mentioned
below (where tapes that were used under the previous MC cause the
drive to issue clean daily). What I have done to work around this
issue.
If the [cln_drv] is displayed and it has only been running less than a
week, continue without error (it goes away when a tape is inserted).
If [CLEAN!] comes up, then you have a cleaning problem and need to
clean it. But once a week I am setting the library in "Offline Diag"
and running the DLT test using a test tape.. that clears up the issue
for longer than running a cleaning tape. The internal controller logs
that it tested itself and everything was fine (saves a lot on cleaning
tapes). This library runs 20 of the 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

I used to have similar problem on my DLT drives. The problem was with the
drive microcode. V65 microcode does not record calibration track onto to
tapes correctly. So the drives detected weak signal and thought that
cleaning was needed. After we upgraded the microcode to V80, the problem is
gone. Be noted, tapes used under V65 will still have problem under V80. If
you can restore data on those tapes, just delete the volumes, redefine
them,
and then restore data.
