In that case, I'll ask a potentially silly question: can you
see/restore the files from the original system?

Having gotten that obligatory question out of the way, what do
you see when you issue the command "dsmc q access" from the
original client (nextmachine) ? If there are no objects, this may
be your problem. You would be able to see/restore the files if
you used the "-virtualnodename" parameter, but not the
"-fromnode" parameter, b/c in the first case you are representing
yourself to the server as the other node (nextmachine), but in
the second case you are identifying yourself as yourself, but
asking to look for files from the other node. If the other node
has not given you access to see/restore objects from it, I
would expect it to fail with "-fromnode" but to succeed when
using "-virtualnode". This is why you are required to give a
password in combination with the "-virtualnode" parameter.
