Hi, Donald,

My ADSM server is on AIX, but the concepts should be the same for reclamation...

Do a "Q VOL STG=TAPEPOOL" where TAPEPOOL is the name of your sequential volume
storage pool. Each volume will have a status and a % used. Candidates for
reclamation have a status of "FULL" and a % used that's less than or equal to
100% minus reclamation threshold you set.

I share a tape library with our AS/400 (which runs BRMS). During the night,
the AS/400 backs up to the tape library and I back up ADSM clients to a disk
pool. I then migrate the disk pool to the library when the AS/400 is finished
with it.

I also have processes that do a "reclamation on demand". Basically, I leave
the reclamation threshold on the tape pool at 100%, then schedule a command
during the day to update the threshold to 80%. If there are candidates for
reclamation, the processes will be kicked off then. I monitor the processes
until they are complete. If there are no candidates for reclamation, my job
streams continue.

Reclamation can happen at any time. The reclamation thread wakes up at 1 hour
intervals to see if anything needs to be done. Since I don't want to interfere
with AS/400 backups, I schedule my reclamations as above.

Hope this wasn't too long-winded of an explanation.

I have been running ADSM on the AS/400 for about three weeks and everything
seems to be going well. Of course there is always that one exception. It
seems that reclamation has never run. I left the reclamation percentage at
the default (68% ??), but what I think I have determined is that is using t
he est. storage amount in the storage pool. The est. amount in the storage
pool is set at 40gig, even though the tape volumes in the storage pool only
add up to 20gig. Is there a way to change the estimated size in the storage
pool? Is there a way to get reclamation to run manually?

Thanks,

Don Burdette
