This is not an error. The %utilized field has been the source of many questions
to this list! Here is how it reports information:

When a new scratch tape is first mounted, the %utilized field is based on the
estimated capacity of the volume, as you defined in the devclass. For the sake
of this note, let's assume that number was 5,000 MB.

When you have written more than 5,000 MB to the tape, and not yet reached end of
tape, then the utilization will report as 100% The "estimated" capacity at this
point will start to increase, now reporting the amount of data that has been
written to the tape.

But..... As files are expired off of the tape, the utilization will drop. If
you do a Q VOL F=D, you will also see information about the %reclaimable space
on the tape. Thus, your tape that is in "full", and %utilized is 24%, the
%reclaimable space should be 76%. Based on the capacity of 10,000+MB, you would
therefore still have about 2,400MB of active data on this tape.

An obvious question then would be, why does the first tape have 10,000MB
capacity on it, while the next tape has only 8,000 MB on it and they are both
"full"? This is due to compression, and is an indication that the data stored
on the second tape did not compress as well as the first volume.

Hope this clears things up....

Hi there
Hi there

The above file contains the output of a q vol command. Notice the
volume status. How is it possible for a volume that is 100% utilised
to have a status of "Filling", and a volume that is
24 % utilised to be 'Full".?

Our setup consists of :

AIX ver 4.1
ADSM server version 2.1.0.6
Tape drive : 3570
 Tapes : 3570C

Please help

Thanx.
