The binding between a node and the management class is done when you define
th enode and assigned him to a policy domain. The management class is part
of the Domain - one management class must be defined as a default for the
domain.

The lastest backup of a file is kept with no retention - thus for files
that never change, one backup is sufficient. If the file changes, and then
is backed up, the lder, inactive copy is kept for a period of time as
described in the management class (retain extra copy). If the file is
deleted, and then an incremental backup is run, then the copies are treated
by the rules established for "only copies" in the management class.

There are no "easy" ways to manually manage older backup copies, but I'm
not sure that any are needed based on the design of the product.

You can assign a different management class to a particular file or group
of files using the Include statement in the DSM.OPT file. I am not really
familiar with the API, and am not clear how it works with this file,
though.

Hope this is of value....

Hi,

just one question ...

At the moment we evaluate the ADSM-API (on AIX 4.1.4 with ADSM-client
2.1.0.6) with the Informix-Tool Onbar to backup Informix-Online (7.21)
databases. Backups are successful everything looks fine 'til now.

But one thing is not clear to me: How long will the backed up objects reside
on the servers storage-pools, do they ever expire, how do I bind a backup to
a management class, is there another mechanism to delete older versions?
Perhaps you folks can help me, I haven't found anything related to this
object in the Redbook "Backing up Database ..." by Cindy Behrens.

Thanks in advance
