     1. When you define the library for your servers, do you point to the
same device name, eg /dev/lmcp0 ?

YES--BUT YOU CAN NAME THEM WHATEVER YOU WANT SINCE EACH SERVER TALKS
TO THE 3494 THROUGH ITS OWN PORT.

     2. Are the tape drives shared dynamically as needed by each server or are
they predefined and dedicated to a particular server?

THEY ARE PREDIFINED AND DEDICATED TO A SERVER, BUT SINCE THEY HAVE TWO
I/O PORTS THEY CAN BE ATTACHED TO BOTH SERVERS AT THE SAME TIME.
(DEFINED ON ONE AND AVAILABLE ON THE OTHER) WHEN YOU HAVE A NEED FOR
MORE DRIVES ON A PARTICULAR SERVER YOU CAN EITHER RE-CABLE THEM OR
MAKE THEM AVAILABLE USING SMIT. YOU WILL HAVE TO MAKE SURE YOUR
DEVICE CLASS IS SET UP FOR THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF TAPE DRIVES AS WELL.

     3. Are you using 'scratch' tapes with the library? If so, how do you
manage them across the multiple servers? Are you using different
'scratch and private' category codes for each different server?

YES I AM USING SCRATCH TAPES AND ITS VERY IMPORTANT TO USE DIFFERENT
SCRATCH AND PRIVATE CATEGORY CODES FOR EACH SERVER. MAKE SURE THEY
ARE DIFFERENT BEFORE STARTING THEM UP. I DID THIS BY MAKING THE
/DEV/LMCP0 UNAVAILABLE THEN I STARTED UP ADSM AND CHECK/DEFINED
        THE SCRATCH CODES.

    4. How do you check them into the library?

I WOULD CHECK THEM IN WITH THE FOLLOWING COMMAND:
        (assuming they are labeled)
checkin libv libname volume devt=3590 status=scratch

Hope this helps, if you have any further questions feel free to e-mail
    me or call.

Brian,
Can you elaborate a little more on how you share the 3494 & its tape drives
among multiple servers? Specifically,
 1. When you define the library for your servers, do you point to the same
device name, eg /dev/lmcp0 ?
 2. Are the tape drives shared dynamically as needed by each server or are
they predefined and dedicated to a particular server?
 3. Are you using 'scratch' tapes with the library? If so, how do you
manage them across the multiple servers? Are you using different 'scratch
and private' category codes for each different server? How do you check
them into the library?
Thanks in advance for your help.
