NEW CLIENT ENHANCEMENTS
The following is a description of the new client enhancements that
are being announced for the first time for at least one or more of
the VM, MVS, and/or VSE/ESA ADSM server platforms.
GREATER THAN 2GB FILE SIZE: This function extends the ADSM
backup-archive client support to file sizes greater than 2GB,
enabling most client platforms which can process files larger than
2GB to backup/restore or archive/retrieve via ADSM. This function
includes enablement of both the ADSM command line and GUI to support
the larger file size, up to the file size limits of the operating
system for the client platform. Statistics fields are also widened
as appropriate. Currently, support for the greater than 2GB files is
utilized by the ADSM for VM, MVS, and VSE/ESA server platforms with
AIX 4.2 and Novell NetWare clients, and the ADSM for VM and MVS
server platforms with Windows NT and Digital UNIX 4.0 clients.
AFS/DFS SUPPORT: AFS and DFS support enables backup/restore as well
as some of the other ADSM functions to be applied to AFS and DFS
systems, via the AIX 4.1.4 client on the VM and MVS Version 2.1
server platforms. This support requires the Open Systems Environment
support feature (formerly referred to as the OpenEdition MVS
Environment). It is not available for the VSE/ESA server platform.
ADSM AFS/DFS Backup Clients system support consists of the
following programs:
o AFS file backup client programs (command line and GUI)
o DFS file backup client programs (command line and GUI)
o AFS volume agent programs
o DFS fileset agent programs
The AFS file backup client allows you to backup or restore AFS
files and directories. In addition, it backs up AFS access control
lists (ACLs) for directories and includes additional mount point
support.
The DFS file backup client allows you to backup or restore DFS
files and directories. In addition, it backs up DFS access control
lists (ACLs) for directories and includes additional mount point
support.
DATA BASE : ALTR PAGE: 4
The AFS volume BackUp to ADSM (buta) is an interface program
between AFS backup commands and an ADSM server, backing up and
restoring AFS data. The buta interface program accomplishes these
processes using ADSM API function calls. The AFS volume backup agent
backs up AFS data by VOLUME. Through the ADSM API, each full or
incremental volume dump is sent to an ADSM server as a file with the
same name as that of the volume. The volume dump files associated
with a dump are stored in a single file space in ADSM storage called
the dump ID string. An ADSM administrator can delete an AFS backup
dump from ADSM storage by deleting the file space in which it is
stored.
The DFS fileset BackUp to ADSM (buta) is an interface program
between DFS backup commands and an ADSM server, backing up and
restoring DFS data. The buta interface program accomplishes these
processes using ADSM API function calls. The DFS fileset backup
agent backs up DFS data by FILESET. Through the ADSM API, each full
or incremental fileset dump is sent to an ADSM server as a file with
the same name as that of the fileset. The fileset dump files
associated with a dump are stored in a single file space in ADSM
storage called the dump ID string. An ADSM administrator can delete
a DFS backup dump from ADSM storage by deleting the file space in
which it is stored.
ADSM WEBSHELL INTERFACE: ADSM for VM, MVS, and VSE/ESA customers
with ADSM OS/2 and AIX clients, and ADSM for VM and MVS customers
with ADSM Windows 95 and Windows NT clients, can now take advantage
of the ADSM WebShell interface. The WebShell interface can be used
to manage backup and restore operations for ADSM OS/2, Windows NT,
Windows 95, and AIX client machines, from almost any workstation, on
any platform, on any network, via a Web browser. Also, an ADSM
backup/restore administrator can centralize the backup restore
operations of many ADSM OS/2, Windows NT, Windows 95, and AIX client
machines, via the ADSM WebShell interface.
The WebShell interface provides a uniform view across these
ADSM clients, regardless of platform. To use it, all you have to do
is point your Web browser at any ADSM client machine that is running
the WebShell interface.
The WebShell interface runs on the ADSM OS/2, Windows 95, Windows NT,
and AIX client machines and provides the following ADSM client
operations:
o Status of backup operations
o Incremental (new and changed files) and selective backup
o Restore
The WebShell interface is an option when you install the
currently announced level of one of the ADSM (OS/2, Windows 32-bit,
or AIX) clients. It can then be accessed from Web browsers running
on any other system.
ADMINISTRATIVE CLIENT ENHANCEMENTS: The AIX, OS/2, HP-UX, Windows
32-bit, and Sun Microsystems SunOS or Solaris administrative clients
have a GUI which has been reorganized into a collapsible tree
structure. This enables the administrator to jump immediately to
certain functions without having to traverse several administrative
GUI panels.
DATA BASE : ALTR PAGE: 5
HIERARCHICAL STORAGE MANAGEMENT: The Hierarchical Storage Management
(HSM) support, on the VM and MVS Version 2.1 servers, is currently
available for the AIX 3.2 and 4.1 and Solaris 2.5 clients. HSM (also
referred to as the Space Management feature) migrates rarely accessed
files to ADSM server storage while the files most frequently used
remain on the local file systems. The user can tailor which files
should be migrated to ADSM server storage based on size and last
reference date. At some later time, if a migrated file is accessed,
HSM will transparently recall the migrated file from the ADSM server
storage.
The HSM support is integrated with the ADSM backup-archive
function. If a migrated file is backed up or archived, the ADSM
server copies the file from HSM storage to backup-archive storage
without the need to recall the migrated file.
Using HSM, you can defer the need to purchase additional disk
storage on your workstations or file servers. By migrating rarely
accessed files to the ADSM server storage, the HSM feature ensures
that sufficient free storage is available at the user's workstation
or file server, giving users the perception of having almost
unlimited local storage.
The HSM function makes the most efficient and economical use
of distributed storage resources by moving files to ADSM storage when
the user needs additional free space. HSM takes advantage of lower
cost storage resources, such as tape, available in the network
environment.
AS/400 (R) API SUPPORT: ADSM provides an AS/400 API which allows
users to develop their own application so that their AS/400 system
will function as an ADSM backup-archive client.
BACKUP-ARCHIVE CLIENT DATE AND TIME FILTERING FOR RESTORE/RETRIEVE:
Command line options, -fromdate and -todate, have been added to ADSM
to allow the user to query, restore or retrieve files backed up (or
archived) within a defined time period. Time filtering refines that
window by accepting -fromtime or -totime. This is particularly
helpful if the files of interest were processed during a schedule,
which often runs on both sides of midnight.
INCREMENTAL BACKUP BY DATE: Incremental backup by date uses the date
as the single criterion for backup. The advantage of this function
is that it bypasses the housekeeping tasks of the regular incremental
backup and, therefore, takes less time. However, it is necessary
that a regular incremental backup be run periodically.
OS/2 CLIENT PASSWORDACCESS=GENERATE: The Passwordaccess=Generate
option was added to the OS/2 backup-archive client and API client.
It keeps an encrypted password on the workstation to use during
session initiation. If the password expires, a new password will be
generated (hence the name).
X/OPEN API COMPLIANCE FOR AIX, SOLARIS, AND HP-UX CLIENTS: ADSM
supports the Backup Services API specifications developed by the
X/Open International Standards committee. These specifications
include source procedure calls, structures and return codes used by
the AIX, Solaris 2.5, and HP-UX 10.01 clients. They answer the
requirement to standardize an API between applications needing backup
services and Storage Management vendors.
