Well the short answer is that the IBM powers that be dropped Solaris 2.8 from the required support list, so NetView followed suit.
The reasoning for these things is often obscure and complicated by dates, legal obligations, and expectations.
I am not certain as to why but I believe (emphasis on "I don't know this for a fact") that SUN has announced an end of support date for Solaris 2.8 within the next year, and the IBM sees it, if NetView 7.1.5 announced support for Solaris 2.8 then we would be bound to support it on that platform even after SUN themselves had dropped their support of the OS, something we might not be able to do. I could be wrong about this, but that was the assumption we here in the trenches were working under. We were far more worried about support for Solaris 10, which is a radical departure from previous versions of Solaris, than about guaranteeing continued operation on 2.8. Sorry if that ruins your plans.

Dear list,
Does NV7.1.5 support Sun Solaris 5.8? When I try to install it, it
didn't pass the nvPREQ script with the error message: Error -
unsupported operating system for this platform.
And I found under dir TOOLS/nvPrqchk.conf, only 5.9 and 5.10 are there.
Could someone give a light?
Regards,
David
