Have you used MLM before? I'd advise you to read the documentation
carefully.

MLM stand-alone (no NetView installed) on a Windows machine behaves just
like any other MLM. You configure it using the smconfig tool on your AIX
box using the MLM/Windows machine's set community name. MLM already
provides a rudimentary trap filtering mechanism using thresholding, but not
rulesets. Rulesets are run by nvcorrd, a NetView server daemon.

If you install NetView for Windows on the same box as your MLM, you now
have an entirely different animal called an "attended MLM". That's where
things get curious. The idea behind this is that MLM works in tandem with
the netmon on the Windows box, not with your AIX box, though things can be
arranged in a hierarchical manner to send status to yet another NetView,
even a UNIX one. Attended MLM is not very popular because it is so
different in function and concept from the other implementation, and does
not offer the capabilities that many people are looking for. It does
allow, however, subdividing your network into semi-autonomous regions, each
with their own local GUI, which can then report to a central site. That's
what it was designed to do -- implement a sort of "manager of managers"
hierarchy.

BTW, rulesets, even on the NetView server, whether on UNIX or Windows, do
not provide an automatic way to send traps to another box. You would have
to write a script of some sort to rebuild the trap out of the variables
provided in the ruleset and use the snmptrap command.

Can I use a Windows based MLM with an AIX based server? I have NetView
7.1.4 fp2 running on AIX 4.3.3 and would like to offload polling of a group
of 500 servers to a MLM. The server group has offered up a Win2K box.
This box has 1 CPU (P4 1.4 GHz), 1.0 GB RAM, 100 MB enet, Win2K, 60 GB
harddrive. Is this enough of a server to poll 500 servers (ICMP only)
every 3 minutes? Can I filter events on the MLM using rulesets created on
my AIX box before forwarding them to the AIX server?
