When discovery is performed, and the options for netmon are set to allow
it, NetView will attempt each community string until one works.

If you have an agent, with none of the community names configured,
NetView simply tries them all and moves on - leaving the log messages of
what he tried along the way.

Sounds like the device being polled with SNMP is not responding to any
of the community names in your community names file.

Subject: [nv-l] SNMP authentication error at the NV Server

Hi list,

I am getting the following error at the NV event viewer:

Wed Jul 06 13:53:32 2005 nvserver A IBM Incorrect Community Name
(authenticationFailure Trap)
SPECIFIC : 0 (hex: 0)
GENERIC : 4
CATEGORY : Node Configuration Events
ENTERPRISE : ibm 1.3.6.1.4.1.2.3.1.2.1.1.3
SOURCE : Agent (A)
HOSTNAME : nvserver
SEVERITY : Warning

...and, at the /usr/tmp/snmpd.log file:

07/06/05 13:34:03 EXCEPTIONS: authentication error: invalid community
name: communityname1
07/06/05 13:34:08 EXCEPTIONS: authentication error: invalid community
name: communityname1
07/06/05 13:38:02 EXCEPTIONS: authentication error: invalid community
name: communityname2
07/06/05 13:38:03 EXCEPTIONS: authentication error: invalid community
name: communityname3
07/06/05 13:39:11 EXCEPTIONS: authentication error: invalid community
name: communityname3

The NV is version 7.1.4 running on an AIX 5.2 box. The
communityNames.conf
file at /usr/OV/conf has 5 different community names on it, including
the
one from the NV server.

The errors that are showing up at the snmpd.log file shows exactly the
community names that were typed into the communityNames.conf file.

Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance.

Mario
