Craig,
It sounds has if NetView is searching again for the correct community name to use for the device. But if the device is already discovered and in the xnmsnmpconf view, then it should not be looking for the community again.  There are a couple of application in addition to netmon (polling/discovery/status) that use a community name, snmpCollect, mib applications, and mib browser.
Is the device listed in the xnmsnmpconf view?
Could there be another application on same box that is also making snmp request?
Do you have a /usr/OV/conf/communitynames file listing multiple community names?
Is the community name used for the sysUptime request list in the community names file?
Was the community name used for sysUptime request "public"?
Run a "netmon -a 160" and a "netmon -a 175", then check the /usr/OV/log/netmon.trace file for the output from commands. The option of 175 will output a listing of all the nodes known to NetView and the polling parameters defined for the node.  Is the correct community name listed?
Is snmpCollect configured to collect data from this node?

[nv-l] Authentication failures coming from Netview

Hi.  We are running Netview 7.1.4 on AIX 5.1 with these patches:

FixPack1, IY50663, IY51641, IY52429, IY54434, IY56958, IY60528

We have some routers that send authentication failure traps denoting Netview's IP address.

I ran a capture this morning and caught Netview using the correct community strings for this device in all cases, except one instance.  It tried to get sysUptime 3 times with the wrong string and then switched to the correct string.

The SNMP config is correct, and demandpolls and quicktests work correctly.

What would cause Netview to query periodically using the wrong strings?

Thanks for any help!

Craig
