    You might want to check /usr/OV/symbols/C directory and make sure there is a pointer from your specified device to an existing bitmap series.
    This is an extract from my /usr/OV/symbols/C/CVTYPE file
SymbolType "Cisco Switch" : "cisco-Cat2908xlFamily"    <--  This will be your 3rd column of oid_to_sym cisco-Cat2940Family
        Filebase "c2900cxl";        <--    This is the name of the compiled bitmap in /usr/OV/bitmaps/C directory
        CursorSize 38;
        Capabilities {
                ciscoType = "cisco-Cat2908xlFamily";
                isCisco = 1;
    You can either use an existing bitmap, or take one that is close to what you want and edit it with a bitmap editor to make it exactly what you want to see.  If you do the editing, you need to do a complete set of files, both the bitmap and mask file for each of the sizes so that it will scale as you change your map scale.  It is actually sort of fun to make your own.  In my case, I can't draw a straight line with a ruler, so it gives me some sense of artistic accomplishment that I don't otherwise get  ;>)

Subject: [nv-l] Fixing plain green squares?

Its been a while since I've had to do this and I need my memory refreshed.
I'm trying to get a few Cisco 2940 switches ( to show up with a suitable generic Cisco icon instead of a plain green square.
So far I've added the following to oid_to_type: Systems:Cisco Switch:BH

and to oid_to_sym: Switch:cisco-Cat2940Family

after copying /usr/OV/fields/Cat2950Family.fields to Cat2940Family.fields.

I've deleted the offending objects from all submaps, stopped netmon, run ovmapcount -a, ovtopofix -A, ovw -fields, ovw -config, ovw -verify and restarted netmon and the R/W map.  These devices are still showing up as plain green squares although the vendor and agent fields are now set to Cisco.

What am I missing or screwing up?
