RE: [nv-l] Node keeps coming back

I don't understand what "go
manually to the database and delete all entries related to that node"
means. That would depend on lots of factors. what kind of node it
was, where it was located in your network, what level of autodiscovery
you were using an so on.
But deleting a node form the database, whatever
it involves, will not prevent discovery if the netmon finds an entry
for the device in someone else's ARP cache. After all, you can delete
an entry from the database manually, but if there is a positive entry for
it in the seed file, netmon will immediately find it and add it back. Deleting
from the database is a one-time thing. But the seed file is used every
time netmon is (re)started. And sooner or later he will find everything
in your network if he can. So as long as it is there, you run the
risk of it being rediscovered, no matter how many times, nor how thoroughly,
you delete it.
Now you said, you delete this node and then
"after awhile" it keeps coming back.. So your delete works .
. . for a while . . . and then netmon re-discovers it. If you want
proof of that, then delete it again and start the netmon trace and watch
for it in the trace file.
So while I don't know what you did on Windows,
I am saying that it does not matter. This is UNIX and I do know how
to keep a device from being discovered. You put negative entries
in the seed file. Those are ones which start with the exclamation
point or "bang" as we call it in UNIX. You can exclude
IP addresses, hostnames, or ranges. You can edit the seed file manually
or use the java editor /usr/OV/bin/launch_seededit
If you have not done so before, it would
be of great benefit to you, or to anyone seeking to understand how netmon
works, to read about using the seed file in the NetView Configuration Guide.

James,
This is a device that was physically disconnected
from location; I then I took it out of etc/hosts and seed file. So,
you are saying that I need to also exclude in seed file, even though
it was deleted from all those areas?
I remember this happening it when I was in
Windows platform and I had to go manually to the database and delete all
entries related to that node.
Thanks
Herman

You need to exclude the device(s) from discovery using the seed file. Otherwise
they will eventually be re-discovered. Think about it.
By default, when you have autodiscovery turned on, netmon will add new
devices to the map whenever it finds them. All that has to happen
is for some already-discovered node to exchange data with one of the one(s)
you don't want to monitor, and that will put an entry for it in the discovered
node's ARP cache. When netmon does a config check it will find that
entry, ping the device, and add it back to the database.
You use the seed file to both promote discovery and to restrict it. Read
about it in the books. You can exclude individual nodes or IP ranges.

I’ve submitted this question back in June and I must have stumped everyone.
But, I thought I would try again before I open a PMR.
I have a location that
we do not
longer monitor.
So,
I deleted everything from the GUI, etc/hosts,
and seed file. But, for some reason it keeps
reappearing on the map. I remember
a while back when I was running Netview on Windows, I had to go to the
object database and delete all related entries to that location from it.
Do, I have to do the same in Netview 7.1.3 AIX?
Thanks,
