Re: [nv-l] NetView 7.1.3 ignores MS SQL server

Unfortunately you cannot use SQL
Server with NetView for Windows unless the SQL Server is both installed
and running at the time of the NetView install. The proper schemas
and so on are only created at install time.
There is no way to cause NetView to
switch to SQL Server after the fact. So you will have to re-install
NetView to use it, if it was not available before. And there is
no provision for anything remote.
NetView topology is not kept in the
SQL databases by default, though traps are, because NetView for Windows
does not use an RDBMS for topology data himself . Internally it uses
the same spares file structure as the UNIX version. You can look
in the \usr\ov\databases\odbc directory and see which relational databases
are populated.
The utility nvdbexport is used to export
data to an SQL Server database for further analysis or report generation.
It is not a way to cause NetView to use the SQL server instead
of Access. Per the NetView User's Guide, the definition for nvdbexport
states:
This utility exports the NetView
object database into an SQL database for either Microsoft Access or Microsoft
SQL Server. You can either export the entire database into a set of tables,
or use the configuration file to customize the table formats and populate
them with entries based on rules. For example, you can create a table containing
just the critical nodes and relevant fields, such as IP Hostname and sysContact.
Then use an SQL report writer to generate reports.
Hope this helps

Subject
| [nv-l] Netview 7.1.3 ignores
MS SQL server |
|
Hello,
could someone advice me with this please ?
We installed Netview 7.1.3 on Windows 2000 server, where MS SQL server
was installed locally before for that purpose.
It should therefore use MS SQL for storing data.
The install log says , SQL database was created succesfully,
but Netview seems not to use it, because after topology discovery, SQL
databases remain empty.
(Despite of that fact, Netview seems to work properly).
Further, can I tell Netview to use ODBC connection to remote MS SQL server
later ?
Many thanks
