As Jane told U, mgragentd is used for the backup function. If 2 netviews
are monitoring each other, and one goes down (i.e. mgragentd or process
that mgragentd depends on goes down), the other netview will issue a
"Netview Down" trap. When mgragentd goes up, other Netview server issue a
"Netview Up" trap. I use this to "auto-monitor" my netview servers and to
issue specific actions to take over the monitoring and trap forwarding
without any human action needed (I had to change the dependency on
mgragentd though).

mgragentd keeps NetView Servers and traditional NetView (X-based)
Clients in synch with each other. It is also used if you implement
NetView backup where one NetView can take over from another NetView on
failure (though backup was listed as being considered for deprecation in
the 7.1 Release Notes).

Cheers,
Jane
