Most trap descriptions are far too long to be used as formatted trap
messages. So what is formatted by default is the enterprise id, the
generic and specific ids, and all the attached variables. There is a
facility to format the actual display message using special keywords -- a
subset of what OpenView allows MIB developers to do -- but that didn't
catch on with many vendors. Details are in the Programmer's Ref on NT,
the Admin Guide or man page on UNIX. On UNIX you can get the trap
description from the MIB by highlighting the event in window, pulling down
the Options, and clicking Event Description, because they are all stored
in trapd.conf on UNIX. I don't know why the original designers of NetView
for NT decided not to save the descriptions for later viewing, but adding
it now would be a major enhancement.
I haven't worked much with the Java version , which is just an option on
the mibloader.bat script ( - - mib2Trap <full_path_MIB_file>). The Java
version will format the variables differently than the standalone version
does, because it imports the variable names, as in "<first_variable_name>
= $1, <second_variable_name> =$2,. . ." and so on. You might find that
more to your liking.

Subject: RE: [nv-l] mib2trap - open failed with cisco works 2000
Hello James,
Thanks very much that seems to have sorted it, I was running it all from
the current directory. Seemed to work on the other MIBS I've done. Never
mind that will teach me for taking shortcuts.
Is there any reason that mib2trap does not import the description into the
trap message?.
Thanks again

Never heard of this one before, so I am as confused by this as you are.
The syntax for mib2trap on NT is a little different than on UNIX, because
UNIX allows you to create a an optional baroc file too, but in either
case, that error message means only one thing. When we tried to open the
input file, we got back a null pointer. I hate to ask the obvious but did
you use a full path name or run it from the directory where the MIB is
located?
mib2trap <full_path_to_MIB_input_file> <user_chosen_output_
file_(bat)_ file>
should work on any platform.

2000
Hello All,
I have installed the Cisco Works integration tool into my NetView 7.1.3
Fixpak 1 environment and now need to created the TRAP definitions using
the
good old mib2trap. All sounded very simple as I have used this before for
other MIB files.
Unfortunately I get an "Open failed for
'STAND-ALONE-ETHERNET-SWITCH-MIB.my', stopping.". this happened on all the
MIB files installed by Cisco, any one seen this before or know of a way
around it?
Thanks in advance
Sean O'Connor
