Just to expand a bit more...
 
My belief has been, that the delete of the object will happen SOMETIME in
the future and I was just not waiting long enough (days weeks years?) I
always figured I was in this boat because it was taking a good deal of time
to remove the objects (i.e the node goes away but the interfaces don't
immediately go away). I have also seen this problem when I have seen a node
deleted and a interface deleted trap after removing the object using Edit |
Delete | From all submaps.
 
Maybe this is something that needs to be traced/dumped/logged with support.

common and (too) easy to do.
Perhaps you cut from all submaps instead of deleting.... who knows :)
In any case, the SmartSet trick will find it, if it exists in the Object
Database and allow you to delete it.
Locate will not find it if it does not exist in the Map Database.
ovtopofix -r  , and as Scott mentioned, ovwdbdmap -d  are UNSUPPORTED
options that could 
also be used to purge the object from the topology and object databases
respectively.
I have used ovtopofix -r successfully for years.   I avoid any incantation
of ovwdbdmap. 
Syntax is:
ovtopofix -r [Selection Name | object# ]
ovwdbdmap -d [Selection Name | object# ]
 
Avoid both of these if the SmartSet trick works for you.

That did the trick! 

I am still somewhat confused as to why that worked.  I created a smartset
for that IP address.  When I clicked "OK" Netview returned that there 
were no objects with that IP address would I like to create the smartset
anyway.  I answered yes, went into that smartset and there was the server I 
was looking for.  I deleted it and Netview rediscovered it.   

I guess my question is, how did the Smartset find it?

Here's  a trick that I use. 
Create  a SmartSet specifically for that object. 
Then  open the SmartSet and delete it. 
  
I have  used this at sites where stopping netmon and running ovtopofix was
not an option  without a maintenance window.

I have an object that I can not  find on my map and I can not force Netview
to discover it ( I put it in the  seedfile ). 
If I run "ovtopodump  hostname" I see an entry for that object.  How do I
remove this object  from the 
database so Netview can  rediscover it or how do I force it to show up on
the map?
