What happens if I installed NV/6000 5.x and 6.x under the Framework and I choose
not to install v7.1 under the Framework? Am I asking for problems?

Yes, migrations from 5.1 direct to 7.1 are supported.  You do it the same
old way.  You make a backup of your existing data and then you do an
upgrade install.
