Jack -
I have to make a distinction here.
There is a difference between a question - "how does this work?" - and a
problem - "why is this not working?".
I can answer your questions if they are simple enough but the chances of
diagnosing your problems over this list are quite small, especially in
areas of the code where I don't work, and netmon and MLM are two of those.
If you have odd behavior you need explained, you should consider opening a
problem to Support.

Why aren't your nodes on the map? Well, I don't know. Are they in the
database? Can NetView ping them too? The MLM-NetView combination was NOT
designed to work over a firewall, though NetView is moving in that
direction. You might be a whole lot happier by reading about such things
in a redbook rather than just experimenting. I recommend two:
SG24-6229-00 Extending Network Management Through Firewalls
SG24-6019-00 Tivoli NetView 6.0.1 and Friends
There are also a lot of prior postings here about the difficulties of
getting objects on the map when both NetView and the MLM cannot reach them.
Since NetView must take over if the MLM goes down, the design generally
requires that the node be reachable by both. Perhaps other users who have
done this may have some advice to give.

As for traps, you will not see an MLM device up/down trap in the Control
Desk by default. They are defined as "Log Only" so they only go to
trapd.log unless you change them in trapd.conf. The design is that the MLM
traps are passed to netmon, not displayed, and netmon re-issues the
appropriate trap, the standard Interface Up/Interface Down or Node Up/Node
Down as required. Those are what you see in the Control Desk by default.

Subject: [NV-L] more MLM questions

Thanks for your help James, it's much clearer now, but I still have some
questions :)

1. I turned Node discovery ON for MLM (-z in netmon.lrf), I see in the MLM
conifg menu, under node discovery table, it has a lot of nodes. But I am
not
seeing any on the map, why? (I have set MLM to do broadcast search now in
MLM Node Dicovery settings, I have restarted netview, ovtopfix -A) What do
I
have to do to make them show on map?

2. In the MLM node on the Netview box, I did Monitor -> MLM -> status
monitoring
-> current status. This is functioning and reporting interface up and down.
I see some interface is down ( I unplugged the LAN cable), but I did not
see
any trap comes in to the Control Desktop (forwardall.rs)after polling
period
is gone, why is that?

3. The following is what I really want to do later. I want to have:

Netivew box ---- firewall ---- MLM ---- network looked after by MLM.

Except for all the firewall rules, what other important issues do I have to
concern with?

Thanks a lot,

Jack
