Hi, Shailesh. When we say Netview supports Token Ring, we mean that it
operates over it and detects it and depicts it just as it does ethernet. If
the
snmp agent on devices inform us that their interfaces are TokenRing, we
draw the segment with the ring symbol, and the layout of the segment
reflects that. (It has to be the first interface, the one that the segment
was
created for, of course). So Token Ring is not mentioned because it does
not matter what the media is.

Now if you are talking about media management, that is another story.
Token Ring media has lots and lots of managability built into it, unlike
ethernet. The now-retired Nways management applications addressed
that for IBM TR devices. The LMU application could draw its own
topology for that sort of thing. I will tell you honestly that I don't miss
them, but I never understood the complexities of TR,

One area of TR management that you can still get is RMON. TR management
is a very big part of RMON. If you have RMON probes in your TR devices,
or have standalone probes in your lans, you should probably get an
RMON management application. I think the probes usually come with a
management application, and some of them have run on Netview over the
years.
Probably they are all standalone now, but would co-exist without problems.
Although RMON is a standard, it is usually best to use the management
app from the vendor who supplies the probe hardware, since implementations
vary from the standard. Nways included an RMON that handled IBM network
devices. I know Cisco offers one for its devices. Several others are on the
market.

Have I gotten close to answering your question>

James,

Let me ask you other way,

Could you tell me Where can I find support for Token ring using
NetView for Unix on IBM/Tivoli web site?

I know that NetView for OS/390 will support token ring but I have
doubt about NetView for unix. I can not find word "Token Ring" in any of
NetView for Unix books along with Redbook (Tivoli NetView 6.01 and
Friends).

What product literature are you reading? IBM at Research Triangle Park in
North Carolina is the largest Toekn Ring site in the world and that is
where NetView is serviced and supported. Works just fine here.

Hello All,

Has anybody try using NetView on unix to monitor token ring networks
? Product literature says that it will only support Ethernet networks.
