Sorry, Dean. I m just guessing about what is going on since I am not
there.
I was just telling you what I had done before and what worked for me. I
created the backup, tar'd and compressed the directory structure, and ftp'd
it from one AIX box to another. I already had the Framework there and
installed the NetView patch. When I installed NetView 6.0 , it worked like
a charm. You didn't mention Solaris in your first note, nor what you had
tried before, nor that you had called Support. So I apologize for giving
you informtaion which didn't help and rubbing your wounds. I am sorry about
the trouble you hve had.

So you are trying to install 5.1.1 on Solaris 8? Never done that, only on
Solaris 6. Nor installed Optivity either. Was the original system Solaris
too?
I take it that it all wnet clean?

But if this 6.0 box had no migration, then why couldn't you just install
Optivity on it clean? Or is that the part that isn't supported-- the
install?
I am just reacting to what appears to be a partial install of some kind.
You wouldn't be getting the symbol messages if there were not some
reference to them already in the map, or in the oid_to_sym files. You
might want to take a system backup before you start working on this again,
so that you can get back to a known state if you have to. I am not certain
what to do at this point.

Here's an excerpt from an append by Ronnie Ross earlier this year entitled
"How-to integrate with Optivity". Perhaps this will be of some help.
Yes, you can. But it is Optivity that has to tie to NetView. Install
NetView FIRST. Put the latest patches on (6.0.2). Then install
Optivity
9.1. During the install, Optivity will find NetView and add stuff to
its
menus. If you already have a map with lots of stuff, you will have to
run
Update Symbols under Tools, Optivity Admin to update all icons to
Nortel
icons if they are Nortel equipment. Otherwise, after you install
Optivity,
all new devices should pick up the right icon.

Perhaps this will be of some help.

Huh? This is what I wanted to do in the first place but, when I tried it,
the box I wanted to upgrade too had nothing but the Solaris OS and when I
installed 60, it would never recognize the backed up 511 database. When I
called Tivoli, they said I should just install 511 on the box and then run
the backup and then upgrade to 60.... so this is what I am attempting.

I did this once and had it working on Solaris 8, but the people at Nortel
said that Optivity 91 was not supported on Solaris 8, so I had to start
over
with Solaris 7. Once I got Sol7 installed, Nortel called and said we could
always try it on Sol8 and it might work.... CRAP!!@! Thanks for telling
me
AFTER I wiped it all out! (sorry for venting).

Thanks

Did you do a migration install of this new box? That is, did you create an
OV.back.v1r1 directory structure onthe current one and put it over on the
new box before you installed NetView 6.0 there? That would have been the
way to migrate everything you had in 5.1.1. You do that using Maintain
==> Backup Selective Data from either smitty or the Framework.

Tyr running ovw -config. Merely adding the symbols is not enough

I recently built up a new server to eventually place Netview 602 on. At
this point, I have it up and running with 511 and our current database.
The
problem is that it has been so long since I have did this I can't remember
where to get the symbol files from. When I open the RootMap, I get all
kinds of errors saying "Missing Symbol File".

I have our original Netview 511 server still running and it does not have
these errors. Is there a file(s) someplace that I can copy over that will
have all the symbol files in it? I tarred the /usr/OV/symbols/C directory
and moved it over and it mad no difference.

Any help would be great.

Thanks
