Netview V6 already retrieves this information and stores it in the
routerSysname
field in the object database. You can see it in Tools..Display Object Info.
You can
also extract it from the database (nvdbformat comes to mind) and use it to
generate
updates to your /etc/hosts file or DNS. What you cannot do is get Netview
to use it
for labeling. I know Openview will use it, but I am glad that Netview does
not, because
I have seen some real garbage in customer's sysName configurations.

Overriding names in /etc/hosts remains the best way of controlling the
labeling of
devices in the map.

Hi. I was wondering if it was possible to setup Netview 6.0.1 (NT) to
retrieve the sysname (.iso.org.dod.internet.mgmt.mib-2.system.sysName) on a
Cisco device rather than it simply look for a host or dns entry when it
discovers the device on the network. I can setup a perl script to do this
but I thought I'd check to see if Netview does it.
