This can happen a number of ways. One is that ipforwarding is on, as has
been mentioned. I think that gets the field 'isIPRouter' set to true.
Another is
multiple interfaces, which has been mentioned. This may set the field
'isRouter', I'm not sure. Then it may also be caused by the 'G' flag in the
oid_to_type file for that particular snmp sysobjectid. When I want a
smartset that is just routers, and not switches, hubs, servers, etc, I add
some conditions, like not hub, not bridge, not Micosoft oid, etc. And
certain hubs (3Coms?) with console ports with IP addresses will show up
as routers because of the two interfaces. For these I add the I flag to
oid_to_type.That seems to help demote them to plain hubs, and stops
the add/delete business that occurs when those console ports all use
the same IP address.

The value of that MIB item (ipForwarding) is on our machine notForwarding ,
so according to your
reply the node is not a router.
However NetView says it is.
My conclusion is that there must be other (or more) conditions which
determine the type of the node.
The node is connected to two FDDI lan's and one normal lan(hme0).
So my question still exists: what brings NetView to the conclusion that it
is a Router?
