Compaq Insight Manager does have a purchasable component
that runs on Netview for AIX. If you put that on, it creates objects that
change color when those traps come in, but I think they mostly indicated
hardware problems, like soft disk errors, etc. There was not much
related to more systems-management function, like disk utilization,
although the agent does support mib variables for that, which you
can monitor via snmp. If you do not wish to purchase this application
you can still monitor the agent directly via snmp from Netview.

Never done this before, but I think the compaq insight
manager agents can fire off traps based on disk
utilization.  You may be able to use these traps to
change the status on the icons. This way it will only
generate traffic when there's an actual problem,
unless you want to collect the data for long-term
trending.
