Re: [Networker] Exchange 2K Backups?

Hello all,
Brian's statement is accurate. I would also point out that MSEXCH:PF is
similar to MB in that it is an optional item-level view of the public
folders store, just as MB is an item-level view of the private store.
>From several replies back in this thread: If your Exchange Server has
KMS or SRS databases installed and active, then you *do* need to be sure
they're backed up. MSEXCH:IS will *not* save them. MSEXCH: will.
Thanks,
_Scott

IS is the Online Exchange BAckup. THis is what you need if you need to
restore the whole Database. THis is manadatory and you better have this
if
the disk goes bye bye.
MB uses a MAPI interface which backups individual mailboxes. THis is
what
you need if you want to restore an individual mailbox. THis is optional
and
takes a very long time. To run MB you need to define a service account.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;262054
You then need to run the backup as this service account.
DOn't rely on this method for Disaster recovery. USe it only for
Executives
etc that you might want to get a single message/folder from date X.

So if I just backup IS, I will get the information stores, and therefore
can restore all mailboxes and public folders in the event I need to
restore? Basically: IS is the Exchanges own backups of the mailboxes
and public folders, right? I am just trying to get around having to use
the MB: saveset, because it always fails with permissions errors.
Thanks,

MB does a brick level backup of Exchange Mailboxes.
You want to use MSExchIS: to backup the databases.
I don't think KMS or SRS do anything in Exchange 2000. I don't use
them and
I have always been able to restore.
The M:\ drive is the IFS interface to Exchange. Forget it is thier
don't try
to back it up or virus scan it or you WILL be sorry. MS's current
best
practice is configure Exchange not to display m:\ See Technet for
instructions.

Thanks a lot!!
What does KMS include?
So unless I use the MB, and PF savesets, the private mailboxes
and
public folders will not be backed up? In other words if I don't
have
those savesets and I need to recover the Exchange server from
backups, I
will loose everyone's mail and public folders?
I can just use MSEXCH: saveset without anything after it, and it
will
backup IS, KMS, and SRS?

Take a look at Appendix A in the Exchange Module Administrator's
Guide
(http://web1.legato.com/infodev/publications/BSM_MSXCH/3.1/nmexcag_3.1.p
df)
MSEXCH: includes IS, KMS, SRS, you don't need to specify IS,
KMS, SRS
separately unless you really want to back them up separately
MSEXCH:MB includes all private mailboxes
MSEXCH:PF includes all public folders

Can anyone tell me what the following savesets do when backing
up an
Exchange 2K server:
MSEXCH:MB
MSEXCH:KMS
Are they necessary, or will the :IS and :SRS backup all the
important
Exchange 2K files?
Do the above savesets reference the M:\ drive on Exchange 2K?
Thanks,
