Back in 2011 I investigated moving from HP-UX to RHEL6 and my research at the time indicated that moving from UNIX to Linux was essentially the same as moving from UNIX to UNIX.   However there was one note that specifically dealt with an extra step if you moved to Linux which I don’t recall the details of now.  I’d say it would be safe so long as you find that note and also keep the same server name for the new master.

In the end we didn’t actually migrate because we wanted to have a new host name for our master and Symantec holds you hostage to professional services for that.   I read stories to indicate that people that thought they did the new name thing on their own started having issues months after the migration so it was enough to scare us into not attempting to use a new name.

Instead we kept our old master running for some time so it would age out old tapes and what not while we ran a freshly installed master on RHEL6.  We did find we were able to copy policies subdirectories from the old master to the new master.  (You must copy in each policy directory as is – there is apparently some sort of checksum NBU keeps track of that makes manually editing files under each policy directory do bad things.)

Hi all,

I need to upgrade some Master servers and we currently run Solaris, but are making a push to move to Symantec Appliances for Media Servers. It would be good for consistency's sake to have the equipment match the Media Servers, but I would consider going to RHEL on some other x86 server, too.
Moving from Solaris to Solaris is pretty easy:
-Ready new server
-Shutdown NBU
-Copy over /usr/openv (it's not just a straight copy, we actually do a simultaneous tar and copy)
-Rename new server to old name and old IPs
-Bring up NBU
-Move on to the next project

Does anyone see why this same process wouldn't work, just going to a different platform? I would appreciate hearing thoughts from anyone who has moved from Solaris to Linux, or specifically the appliances.

Thanks for the input.
Rusty
