I have NBU 7.5 & 7.1, I am running into an issue that VSS is getting out of
sorts where the job starts and just sits there on created shadow copy. After
awhile VSS is messed up and only found that a reboot clears it up. When
multiple jobs are run we know it is a space issue. How do you manage VSS or
clear any problems without reboot? Windows 2008 R2.

Everyone, I am getting a restore problem on an Open VMS client. It seems that I
am getting a permissions error when trying to write a restore to a VMS disk..
Backups run without issue.

Hi,

We currently have 2 Netbackup domains each with a master and media server and
each with a pair of Symantec 5020 appliances. We have the 5020's configured as
disk pools in each domain and we have a storage lifecycle policy that
duplicates the images between both domains.

We are fairly new with Netbackup, moving from a number of different backup
solutions. We are thinking about adding a small tape library (LTO-5 drives
with 30 or so tape carts). We would like to keep most of our daily / weekly
images on the 5020's but we are going to need to copy our monthly images to
tape.

My question is, given the above configuration, can we add a single tape library
to one of the backup domains and can we configure the overall solution so that
we can get our monthly backup images from either domain not only on the 5020's
but also write them to tape?

Thanks, Kevin

Hello All,

I know this is not a Craigslist or EBay however, I wanted to reach out to the
NBU community to see if anyone would be interested in our Quantum tape
libraries.

We have:

1. Quantum 2500, 85 tape capacity w/ 2-HP Ultrium LTO3 tape drives &

2. Quantum 1500 25 tape capacity w/ no drives.

Both in perfect working order and cosmetically free of defects.

Would like to sell everything as a package deal so these things don?t end up in
a landfill. Willing to sell everything for $500, pick up only located in
southeast Michigan. May be willing to assist in pre-paid arranged
freight/shipping.

Let me know if you or anyone you may know is interested.

Regards,

John Keating

Does anyone have suggestions on managing the VSS Space on Hosted Hyper-V Server.
This gets hosed every two days and reboot is the only solutions. Is there a way
to manage This space and keep it clean without rebooting?

Met with our Symantec rep and our SE this morning and they're suggesting that
we upgrade from 7.1.0.1 to 7.5.0.1. I'd planned on going to 7.1.0.4 because of
the vSphere 5 support, but didn't plan on going to 7.5. Are any of you running
7.5 or 7.5.0.1 and how easy/painful was the upgrade from 7.1.0.1 or a similar
point release. 7.5 does have some functionality that we'd like to use, but I
wanted to know what others thought before we made the decision.

Thanks,
Howard

Jimenez,

We ended up putting new tapes in the library to confirm that it's not a matter

Dear Al,

Here is our setup.

Master Server (6.5.6) = Sun Solaris 10 (64bit)

Media Server (6.5.6) = Sun Solaris 10 (64 bit) and AIX

Tape Library Storage Teck.

Filer = Net Apps.

The issue is recently we have moved our Windows SQL backup's from windows
client to Remote NDMP Backup.

The backup is working fine and through put has increased from 25mb/sec to
65mb/sec. Really it is a good speed over the LAN.

The issue is NDMP Backup is not clearing the Archive Bit after the Backups.

I have gone through Symantec Forum but could not find some custom script or
advise to change the archive bit after the NDMP Backup.

I am sure I am not the Ist who has adopted this method.

I will highly appreciate your comments and advise how we can achieve this. i.e
some methods or custom scripts etc..

With Regards

Netbackup 7.1
Windows 2008 R2
Qlogic QLE2460 HBAs
Quantum i6000 Tape Library with (HP) Ultrium5 and Ultrium 3 drives.

I?m a UNIX admin so don?t really know my way around windows well. The HBAs
show up in Windows but no drives beneath them. The HBAs show up in Qlogic?s
SANSurfer and I see ?type? as ?disk? for the library and it doesn?t seem to
have a place to change ?type?. In SANSurfer I do see LUNs for each of the
tape drives. After doing some research I used SANSurfer to turn on
persistent binding and rebooted but it doesn?t seem to make a difference.

When I go into NBU console and try to create storage units it shows me the TLD0
but has it in red so presumably there is a problem. If I try to go ahead and
configure it it says:
?The device is not supported by the volumes wizard at this time?.

Are library is partitioned so that all but 1 of the drives is one partition and
that 1 drive (an Ultrium 3) is in the other partition. In the Windows devices
I see the Ultrium 3 as a tape drive and the NBU storage units show that as
well. The windows devices do not show the drives from the other partitions.

I do have the SSO and Tape Drives options licensed on the server. All the
appropriate NBU services seem to be running.

If I try to setup storage unit in the NBU GUI for disk storage (for our
attached dedupe appliances it shows this media server but when I tell it to use
the tape it doesn?t show it.

Any ideas?

You might be stuck. Clearing the archive bit requires accessing the data at
the file system level. NDMP is a lower level protocol that is accessing at a
block level.

Out of curiosity, why do you need to clear the archive bit? My experience is
the archive bit is not very reliable for determining when a file should be
backed up. I always recommend using the time stamp instead.

The key thing is to get the Windows system to see the drives first. Symantec
stopped shipping device drivers for Windows several versions ago and is relying
upon the underlying operating system to properly configure the drives. Quantum
should have on their web site some Windows drivers for the library and the tape
drives.

On the i6000, there is some advanced masking you have to do for the drives to
be properly seen by the media server. You might have to work with Quantum to
get this done. Quantum will need the WWN's of the FC adapters in you media
server to accomplish this.

What does windows report for the tape driver in device manager.
In the past veritas supplied their own tape drivers, but I believe that they
are moving away from that.
I am not sure if Quantum supplies a driver for their library.
But it may be a driver issue.
If everything is ok with the driver, you might try a reboot of the system to
see if that improves things.
