vmchange  will let you change the media type, the volume group and even the barcode on active tapes.  There are more options, but those are the only ones I have actually done.

You cannot make any change to a tape if it has valid images on it.

So if you do not want to expire the tapes, change one of your drives to the same media type as the tapes you want to restore from.

Our environment, NBU 6.5.4 running on HP-UX 11-31 with a Data Domain VTL and MSL6060 tape library.  I need to change the Media Type on a few tapes that are currently HCART to HCART2 but am having trouble.  We have changed tape libraries since these tapes were created, the tape library is now HCART2 and our vtl is HCART.  I tried to set it to HCART2 when I injected them into the library but that didn’t do anything and they injected as HCART.  I tried to delete the tapes but get a “cannot delete assigned volume 000746. Cannot delete assigned media” message.  Do I have to expire the tapes, delete them and then import them to change the media type or is there an easier way.  The data on the tapes is good and I do need to recover files from them.

Thanks in advance…..
