Re: [Veritas-bu] VBR Setup Q's

I understand that, Boris. My point was
that OpsCenter will not have the advanced reporting (I forget what Symantec
is calling the additional module) that you are used to today with Aptare.
I do not know if the freebie VBR license will allow you to utilize this
module or not once 7.0 comes about.

yes, Rusty. I am happy with Aptare, but my management
doesn't want to spend a dime on the Aptare renewal anymore, why pay for
something that you can get free, and you can argue and show all the value,
it is all about to save money for the company.
I want to see if we can try other Aptare products, like Capacity manager
and another VM Manager.

Boris,
VBR will not be included in 7.0. There will be some reporting included
in Ops Center which may be new reports to the base NetBackup product, but
there will also be another option for additional, advanced, reporting -
this is probably the stuff most of us would want.
My XSP licensing also includes VBR, but we still decided on Aptare anyway
as it had already paid for itself.

Unfortunately I am in the same situation. I have Aptare and I am happy
with it, but now we have VBR for free, and it will be included in NBU 7.0.
My management doesn't want to pay for the renewal for Aptare :(
It looks like Symantec is going to force a lot of customers to use their
reporting tool rather then anything else. I was hoping to use Aptare for
the storage and VM environment as well. Symantec priced us too high for
the storage side thought.

That's crazy. It sounds like they are digging for more info or trying to
get you to convert to VBR.
We are on this licensing model and the data we send them is via Aptare.
I don't understand why they are making you do that.
Sorry, that was of no help to you. We installed an older version of VBR
to test against Aptare and it wasn't anywhere near as complicated as you
are describing.
I might suggesting making sure that there isn't a specific port/ports that
need to be open? Does VBR have the equivalent of checkinstall?

Hello all,
(Hopefully there's a user or two out there who's using VBR instead of Aptare
;-)
Long story short, Symantec is trying to convince me to change my
licensing scheme to a completely usage-based licensing model (some of you
probably are doing this) instead of the current individual license purchase/support
I have currently. Doesn't cost me anything to check it out, with
the caveat they're forcing me to install and configure VBR, even though
I have a fully functional Aptare server that could give them (likely) the
exact data they need.
Anyways, VBR 6.6 looks like a beast, this user's guide is 617
pages long and honestly, for the once per year I'm going to run a report
(if I go through with this), it ain't worth fully learning. Looking
for some quick hits on how to set it up. I've got the VBR install done,
and I've set it up pretty much as far as I can go without help. Here's
what I've done:
1) Install VBR Server onto a Windows server.
2) Install VBR Agent onto the same Windows server.
3) Install RAC (Netbackup Remote Administration Console 6.5GA) onto the
same Windows server.
4) Added the name of the VBR Server to the bp.conf on my master server
(RedHat, 6.5.3.1) , confirmed the VBR server can run a "bpdbjobs -S
<master_server>" successfully.
5) Added a data collector instance within the VBR Agent configuration.
I left the polling intervals at their defaults, and backups ran normally
last night but no data was collected. Did I miss out on any key
setup steps?
Cheers,
Jon
