I'm not sure where this information is kept for UNIX, but if you hit the Storage Configuration Wizard in Windows there is a "Configure Drive Name Rules" button for auto assigning drive storage unit names.  I believe the default is <vendor ID>.<product ID>.<index>.

I’m trying to determine how the configuration wizard determines what names to give storage units. I found the one for disk drives but can’t seem to find it for Storage units. Any help would be appreciated.
