Thanks Tim

We have logged a call with SUN as well – still waiting for feedback.

We found the same TechNote as well as a very old patch README for Emulex hba’s.

According to the system administrators, the same Leadville drivers for the Qlogic hba’s are working fine on other media servers.

While we were waiting for Symantec to respond, I ran support script in anticipation of output being requested – that ran through without any problems – scan output picked up all tape drives.

I do not believe it’s a NetBackup problem, as the same binaries are working 100% on all other media servers. I have no means of verifying what the system owners are saying about the hba drivers… Gut-feel says that’s where the problem is.

Kind regards

M.

And have you contacted SUN?  I recall an issue a long time ago (so can't remember details) where sgscan could cause a panic on a Solaris system.  Seems to me it was related to HBA drivers and how they handled the scsi commands sgscan runs.

There's also the 'scan' command too.  It's probably doing the same things as sgscan (scsi inquiry IIRC) so would likely do the same thing, but it's at least a way to find out if it's a problem with JUST sgscan.

A quick Google search found at least one TN from Symantec too:

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/206544.htm

And SUN:

Hi Everyone

NetBackup 6.5.4 server software installed on server that used to do backups over the network up to now.
sgscan causes kernel panic (as well as tpautoconf -t). QLogic  QLA2462 hba with Leadville driver.
We have logged a Sev 1 call with Symantec - all they could suggest in the 3 hours since the call has been logged was to 'disable tcp fusion'!

Any ideas will be welcome.

Kind Regards

Marianne
