No that is incorrect.
You can you APPEND to the end of a tape.
Image1, image2, image3, image4,
image5(tape is full)
Image1 expires
(expired image), image2, image3, image4,
image5
^^^^^^^^^^^
You cannot write here. You can only
append to the end of a tape. If the tape is full(all the way to the EOT). Then
you cannot write to the tape again until image5 has expired.

backup error core 96
HI
We are using
LTO3 tapes and all tapes are same.
We have Net
backup Ver 6.5 running on Solaris platform. We are using SL 48 LTO 3
drive.
Policy for which
this error has come, assigned with one tape of 800GB and we take only wkly full
backup.
Backup size is
100GB. The retention period for this policy is 1 month.
So what we
understood is this tape has reached EOT , but as per u mail below which
gives more clarity stating, images are getting cleaned from tape due to .The
retention period and once it reaches EOT it should stat writing from
beginning of tape or where ever it has space.
Hope my
understanding is correct.

Look at your policy, what storage unit are
you using.
If your storage unit is using Hcart3
tapes, then it is telling you that you have no Hcart3 tapes avail to use for
backups. You have run out of scratch or other tapes that it is allowed to
append to.
