I should state that the majority of my policies are generic with all
local drives.
Only when they want something strange do I make a new policy.

I do have a number with LARGE file systems that get their own policy but
just because I want smaller streams and break the up
new
F:\a*
F:\b*
New
F:\c*
F:\d*

I have some odd requirements like that too.

Say servera needs E,F,G

Serverb needs C,E,F

So far 2 policies

Serverc needs just E,F - I put that in the same policy as servera but
with an exclude of G:\, or it could go in the same policy as serverb
with an exclude of C:\.

I try to group them based on the drives needed to backup instead of a
policy for each.

I have trained most of the windows guys here to inform me when new
drives are added or they make any kind of big change to a server so I
can verify I am backing up what they need.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] how to specifying what to backup

I am in an environment with a large number of machines each requiring
backups for different purposes. As each machine is different in some
way it has resulted in nearly 300 policies. Each one backup up one or
two directories.

I wanted to find out how other people are getting round this and
reducing the number of policies.

I have seen some discussion about using include and exclude list to
define what is backed up, but this can mean that you have to look at
each client to find out what is backed up and the activity monitor when
you look at it is not giving an accurate representation of backups.

Any feedback greatly appreciated.

James
