On Monday I will be moving my Netbackup server to a new office.  Its running Netbackup 5.1 MP7 on an IBM P630, the OS is AIX 5.2).  It will be backing up new Window server clients such as a fileserver, Exchange server and some application servers.  It will use a new tape library, a NEO 2000 with the same type of LTO-3 drives (I was using an ACSLS attached to a Sun/StorageTek SL8500 with 4 LTO-3’s) attached to the fiber cards on the AIX server.

I expect to be able to restore from my old office’s previous backups but will be backing up new clients.  I administer Netbackup from a Netbackup Administration Console running on a Windows 2003 terminal server in the same office Netbackup was, but I will move that terminal serer to the office where Netbackup is in a week.

I’ve never done a move like this but it seems to me like this should not be difficult.  Here are the steps I think I need to do:

  1. After moving the server to the new office and connecting the tape library, setup the new TCP/IP configuration using SMIT on the AIX Netbackup server.

  1. Change the 1st ‘Server =’ line to the name of the server on the ‘bp.conf’.  It will have the same server name but the domain will be a new trusted domain.

  1. Launch the Netbackup Administration Console on the terminal server in the old office.
    1. Will it automatically see the Netbackup server in the new office after the DNS update propagates?

  1. Then I connect to the new library using the ‘Configure Storage Devices’ wizard.
    1. Should I delete the old ‘rmt’ files from the ‘/dev’ folder before I plug in the new library and run ‘cfgmgr’?  I am not as knowledgeable with AIX as I am with Windows but I should have access to my coworker who has more experience with AIX.
    2. Since I used an ACSLS to connect to my old library I had to use ‘tpautoconf’ to configure the tape drives.  I assume the ‘Configure Storage Devices’ wizard will be sufficient to connect my new library?

  1. Install backup agents on my new clients.

  1. Setup the new Policies.

  1. Start the backups!

Since I will be using the same catalog I will be able to restore the files from my old clients to the new clients if necessary.  I will be using the same LTO-3 tapes from the other office.  The only stuff I think I will need to restore are the from the Windows Exchange server which moved to the same office Netbackup is moving to a few weeks ago and a Windows file server that is being moved to a different office.

Below is the bp.conf.  Many of the entries were added during troubleshooting technical support calls over the last 8 years so I don’t know how relevant all the lines are for the new library and clients.

Are there any other configuration files that I need to adjust?

Obviously what I’m looking for is a sanity check to make sure I’m not missing any steps for this critical backup move.  The office that Netbackup will be in is currently using a Backup Exec 11.D running on a Windows 2003 server connected to another NEO 2000 tape library.  That server and library are moving to a new office later in the week.
