Hi Steve,

I would recommend to read this source to better understand how to back up your virtual environment.

http://searchdatabackup.techtarget.com/generic/0,295582,sid187_gci1336136,00.html

But, as a quick note:

- Traditional method, when you have NetBackup agent installed within VM OS, works really well for me. I don't do any backups for ESX hosts or any backups at the ESX host console level. We use HP RDP to provision our ESX, VM and physical boxes, then all configuration records maintain on that level as well as we use ECM to maintain any changes after the systems built.
You would need just one license per ESX host for each OS channel, for example you would need just one NetBackup Windows client license, and if you have Linux/Solaris, then one UNIX client license.
- VMware VCB, but you would need to have an advanced client license to perform snapshots of your VMs. NetBackup 6.5 has integration with VCB when you can present ESX host LUNs to NetBackup media server with VCB package installed on it. VCB would require a SAN architecture in place.

Hope this helps.

Boris

Hi All,

Does anyone have instructions on backing up an ESX server (running version 3.5 update 1 (3.5.0,82663). I have installed the Linux client and can back the server up but this does not capture the necessary vmdk files.

I realise that I probably have to do something on the ESX side of things but have little VM experience so would be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction.

My NetBackup environment is running v5.1MP7.

Thanks in advance,

Steve.
