The client has to be at least 5.1 mp5 to
work with the 6.5 master.

You can continue to use
5.x client agents with 6.x master and media servers.
My master and all media servers are at 6.5.1, but I still have 5.1 client
agents for Windows, Solaris and Linux. I have no any issues with the
backups.
