Don't know what to say.  Works fine for me on 6.0 MP5 (linux)

# vmquery -m V00005 | egrep 'ID|barcode'
media ID:              V00005
barcode:               V00005
# vmchange -barcode XXXXXX -m V00005
# vmquery -m V00005 | egrep 'ID|barcode'
media ID:              V00005
barcode:               XXXXXX

Any messages or warnings generated when you run the command?
