We use Datalink for our NetBackup support and I can't recall a case that I've
filed with them that I wasn't completely satisfied with their support. They're
very knowledgeable about the product, and quite a few have experience outside
of just NetBackup (unix, switches, data domain, etc).

For the record we have several environments using NetBackup with Solaris and
Windows both. We also utilize NDMP, Data Domain Restorers with VTL
configurations (about to implement replication), NetApp filers, LTO2 and 3
libraries (Quantum and Storagetek), and Cisco and Brocade SAN switches. I've
been able to rely on Datalink to help with all of our environments and
appliances at one point or another, and they've always been able to deliver. I
highly recommend them for support.

Have you run a devfsadm? Also, what Solaris kernal are you running? There was
an issue with a patch that basically destroyed the sg driver.

I got a response from my Symantec rep, and here's what he said:

"It was just a warning. If you are using ACSLS access control, you need to
make sure that all the NBU media servers in the NBU media share group have
the same ACSLS access permissions on the media in the ACSLS database. Kind
of obvious, but it?s actually been a minor issue in regular NBU running
without media sharing."

If it's this simple, why couldn't that have been put in to the manual?
Anyway, I'll be implementing this feature in the next week or so and will
report back on how it goes.

I could see some problems if your ACSLS setup has watch_vols going (all
tapes are not visible to all servers automatically). Enabling Media
Sharing across all media servers could then open the door to NetBackup
requesting a tape mount on a server that can't actually see that tape
maybe.

Not something I've seen, just a possibility.

I was just looking over this last night, and was surprised it's not on by

I also ran across a statement in the guide that said you should use

cautious. Anyone have an idea?

[Veritas-bu] Anyone using media sharing in 6.5?

I'm finding that I'm vaulting quite a few partially used tapes, because
each tape can only be written by the server that owns it, and I have 7
media servers. The new media sharing option in 6.5 looks like it would
help to optimize the tape usage, but I'm wondering if anyone has tried
this out yet? I checked the knowledge base and there are several bugs
related to media sharing that are fixed in 6.5.2 (which I am using).
Just a bit nervous to enable this in production. I'm also wondering
where a shared tape is mounted for a restore...is it based on the server
that the image was written on, since there would be no overall tape
"owner"? We use alternate restore server options quite frequently, so I
don't want to break that.

Any comments on media sharing would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bryan

We are about to do this. The basic steps we are looking at are :

* bpmedia -movedb for each tape owned by the media server so that the tapes
are owned by the old 5.1 master
* Uninstall NBU 5.1 on media server
* Install NBU 6.5 on media server and integrate into new 6.5 environment
* Remove storage units associated with the media server in the 5.1
environment
* Remove SERVER= entries from the 5.1 environment
* Possibly, further down the track, import remaining long retention backups
from 5.1 environment into 6.5 environment

Cheers,
Dean

Same here, that's pretty much my plan. However, with large catalog's
that bpmedia -movedb step can literally run for days, even weeks on a
media server with many tapes. I've thought about using bpimage to move
the images rather than the media. I haven't tested it thoroughly yet.
Does anyone have experience with this alternative, is it any faster? Is
it sufficient to move image and tape ownership away from the migrating
media server?

Good discussion, as I am looking at "MIGRATION" from 5.1 Server to NEW
Server 6.5.2

My onyl concerns I have in the back of my head is how to move a Media
Server that is on 5.1 over to 6.5.2

Anyone done a migration from an old system to a new one?

Not too worried about the old robot or catalog, as this is all being
replaced. If need be, I will have to import.

Some systems are SQL, Oracle based online media servers

Thanks,
Simon

Yeah! Cheap shots at Symantec are reserved for those of us who have
spent many restless nights fighting Netbackup. =P

Just my .02 - Migrated several Windows 2000 5.1 environments to 6.0 MP4
and then to 6.5.1, 6.5.2 and 6.5.2a. Although there have been issues,
I've only had to apply one engineering binary to one environment that
had an issue with calendar backups. Maybe I'm just lucky (or maybe
Symantec doesn't test on Non-Windows OS =P) but from my experience I
think 5.1, 6.0 MP4, 6.51+ are all stable products.

Hi,

At my shop we have a bunch of backup tapes that were made from a Novell 5
server using Netbackup (version 5 I believe). I've been asked to restore data
from one of those tapes. Of course our last Novell server is long gone. We
have Windows (2003) servers mostly running Netbackup version 6.

Is it possible to restore these Novell backups to a Windows server using
Netbackup? I don't care about the permissions; I just need the files. Thanks
for your help.

That's definitely a question for support, especially given that it's Friday
night.
