I hope I didn't hijack this thread with my problem. The job ended up failing 
with: Error nbjm(pid=4292) nbrb status: RB deallocated orphaned resources 

I used "the google" and found this tech note:

Although it doesn't really apply to a catalog backup I ended up deleting the 
policy and recreating it. I resubmitted the job and it worked. I remember 
accidentally creating this as MS-Windows policy. It's working but... would have 
like to have better figured out the root cause.
