So it's about 1 AM
in Seattle. I've spent most of today trying to get my NetBackup server upgraded
to NetBackup 6.5.2. I finally had everything installed, recovered to the new
environment using bprecover and then spent the next four hours trying to figure
out why nbemm wasn't starting and trying to roll back to 6.5, which failed
because the BMR 6.5.2 update wouldn't let me uninstall it, which meant that
I couldn't uninstall the client and server upgrades.
After looking at the
discussions on this mailing list and on the Symantec blog I have to ask if
anyone is using NetBackup because it's a really good product or simply because
it is the least defective, least worthless, least offensive and least
painful enterprise backup product on the market? I also have to wonder,
given my experiences and the experiences of others that I have read about, if
Symantec does any testing whatsoever before they release new versions of the
product. I've run into more major show-stopper bugs in 10 months of using
NetBackup 6.x than I did in three years of using 5.x. and I'm not the only
one.
I am rapidly coming
to a point where I trust the pronouncements from Symantec about the features and
benefits of new versions of their software about as much as I trust those few
spam messages that get through my filters that promise me cheap Rolex watches,
generic Viagra/Cialis/Levitra and riches beyond my wildest dreams if I send my
bank information to Dr. Clement Okon in Nigeria.
Am I the only one
who feels this way?
