I was wondering if anyone out there had seen a bug/error similar to what
I'm describing below...

Master is 5.0 MP4 (Sol 8)
Client is 5.0 MP4 (Win2k3)

Scenario A (backup works): multistreamed backup with Windows Open File
backup disabled
Scenario B (fails with SC195 and/or SC211): multistreamed backup with
Windows Open File (VSP, all default configs) enabled

With Windows 2003, VSP is evil, evil, evil. Remove the client, reboot, and install without VSP. Apply the Microsoft VSS patches (there are some none that are not security related so you have to go hunt for them).
