I’ve encountered the same issue as I am currently evaluating both NetBackup and vRanger Pro (http://www.vizioncore.com/vrangerpro.html ) for backing up VMware environments.

From my VMware guys I understand that the latest release of VCB now supports NFS and vRanger have confirmed that the only reason their software doesn’t work is because they haven’t yet upgraded their plug-in rather than a lack of support for NFS in VCB.

I am still waiting on Symantec to confirm if this will now be supported with the latest VCB version.

Does anyone out there have any more info?

Steve.

I believe LAN mode is direct attached storage (to the virtual host.)  Aka. Snap the volume on the virtual host and use the LAN to transfer the image.

I don’t think NFS is a supported configuration.

So “LAN Mode” is NFS?

From the VMWare Backup guide: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_35/esx_3/r35/vi3_35_25_vm_backup.pdf

Page 25:

VMware supports the following two modes of Consolidated Backup:

􀂄 SAN Mode (Fibre Channel and iSCSI)

􀂄 LAN Mode

If I'm not mistaken I think the Symantec configuration doc says the same thing.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Netbackup & VCB over NFS

Hi,

I’m doing a test setup with Netbackup 6.5.1 and ESX.

I want to setup VCB backups with VM hosts on Fibre, iSCSI, and NFS.

Fibre & iSCSI works great … but when I want to backup the VM Hosts that are located on an NFS “voluim”, it doesn’t work.

I get an error 156.

We installed the NFS tools on the VCB proxy and we can mount the host with the vcbmounter tool.

Does anybody know if VM hosts on NFS are supported by Netbackup?

If so, are there special things I should keep in mind?

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Stefaan
