An inadvertent action within support which was relying on published documentation in fairness to the TSE  was  caused by the following statement found in technote 266720 and actions are being taken to claify the information in future documentation as necessary.

Note: If you are using NetBackup Vault and plan to decommission a media server, it is recommended that you contact VERITAS Consulting for help with this task.

While the technote was written for  NetBackup 5.x the statement may also be found in NetBackup  6.x documentation. In some cases  "recommended" may have been dropped. The need for consulting is "NOT" a requirement if one properly decomissions the media server and also keeps in mind activities regarding Vault which may refer to the removed media servers.
There have been changes in 6.x which makes it easier to correct improper decomissioning of media servers.  6.0 MP5 and 6.5  now allow running bpmedia -movedb after a Media Server has been removed.

Our apologies for the confusion.

Windows across the board, 6.0 MP1, and I want to retire 3 media servers.  Sounds easy enough, right?  According to the documentation, and verified by Symantec Technical Support, because I am using NetBackup Vault, I need to avail myself with the services of a Symantec Consultant to do this for me.  That's all I got from them.

My boss is already having me compare other backup products because of the maintenance check we write every year for NetBackup.  Now I have to go to him and say, "I know you're tired of paying Symantec all that money and I know you thought we were going to cut cost by getting rid of 3 of our media servers but guess what?  We have to pay Symantec to come over and turn them off for us."

It can't be that difficult, can it?  Can someone point me to some documentation, blogs, guidelines, NBU gypsy tarot reader who might guide me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance,

Randy
