Hi
Well Exchange Mailbox Backups over the LAN (and I assume it
is via the LAN as the Exchange Information store seems to report throughput
based on this) does not surprise me.
I try to avoid Exchange Brick Level Backups (BLB) at all
costs, where possible, because of the time and throughput it
takes.
You do not say which version of Exchange Server you are
running. Can you advise?
For the Win2k3 boxes, turn off any AV during the backup
process, disable tracker.exe and any disk i/o tasks that may be running (disk
keeper being one of them). Tracker running on a Windows box while the backup is
going will not help.
If you are backing up millions of small files, then
products like the NetBackup "Flash Backup" add on, may help
here.
Also, how much Data are we talking about here for the
Windows and Unix backups? 500+ GB's? or TB's
Simon
We now only have one working drive in our ADIC Scalar
100 with a Solaris Master/Media Server with Veritas Netbackup 4.5 FP6 and we
have some backups are taking extremely long to complete. One is Exchange
Mailboxes and one is a Unix server and the other is Windows 2003 Server. They
all have "Allow Multiple Data Streams" checked in the policy they run in. The
Windows server had a throughput of 3133 kbps but ran for 9+ hours. The Unix
Server ran for 11+ hours and the Exchange Mailbox Backups just have bad
throughput (90 kbps or less) The Information Store backup on the same
exchange server does not have any issues. Should we stop using Multiple Data
Streams on all our policies? Should we look at any other factors that are
responsible for the long job run time?
