There is the possibility of using Solaris' ufsrestore utility to restore NDMP 
backups - its hit or miss and when multiple tapes are involved, it can become 
more complicated, but I was able to restore a majority of data from two AIT-3 
tapes that used NBU 4.5 and NetApp 6.x.  Here's a useful link:

As you correctly surmised, it's not possible to do cross-platform
restores, as NDMP just provides the transport methods, but each vendor
is allowed to format the data in any which way they like.

NetApp uses dump, the Celerra can do dump or tar via PAX.
