I don't know a way to measure how much is "redundant" easily. Maybe the
much vaunted Aptare would have that - I'll wait for their fan club to
comment on that. :-)

However, the fact that deduplication devices (block level) seem to be
providing reported compressions from 40 to 1 to 80 to 1 on this list
would seem to indicate there is one heck of a lot of "redundancy".

So far it appears to us the deduplication devices are living up to or
exceeding expectations.

Of course for critical systems and DR purposes you still want an offsite
strategy. Either duplicating to tape or having a remote unit to which
you can transfer the deduplicated data.

In a traditional Netbackup shop with monthly fulls and daily
incrementals, there could be 12 copies of files over the course of a
year. There are various ways to eliminate duplication but the first
step is to measure it. Is there an effective way to measure how much of
the backup volume is actually redundant? There may be a minimum number
of copies needed in case a tape fails, and there may be offsite copies
needed as well. I am just interested in the redundant copies to justify
further investigation into deduplication technologies. What tools can
measure it?
Thank you!
