Re: [Veritas-bu] pempersist

Dominik,
I think we're both on the same page with the treatment of these files. I can say that things seem to be much better for us with 6.5.1 than they were in 6.0. We migrated from 6.0MP5 to 6.5.1 on Jan 1st, so I have somewhat limited experience with it, but enough to say that things are indeed improving!

Larry,
I agree and I have mentioned it to
engineering several times, sent off logs etc. We currently use 6.0MP4 and I am
told that this will finally be fixed in 6.0MP6. Note: they have been saying
something similar since 6.0MP2. Shutting down netbackup, deleting pempersist
and restarting has been fairly harmless in my experiences (6.0 only). Although
others may have had other experiences. But as we are all waiting for Netbackup
to work as per brochure, we all have our little fixes we shall use until that
day comes.
Anyway, I do try several things before
deleting pempersist and it is something I have been made familiar with by engineering
but I do agree that you should talk to support before you do such things. In
the end, it's in the hands of the netbackup admin, you do things at your
own discretion / risk so you should understand what you are doing and the impact
of your actions. Not that I want to tell people how to do their job. I had
better stop now.
Happy netbackup admining,
Dominik
Both pempersist and
STREAMS are considered by Symantec to be internal data structures reserved to
NetBackup. In my opinion it is interesting to attempt to understand how
NetBackup uses these files, but I would not rely upon this understanding to try
to second guess what NetBackup is up to. In the past I've written
utilities that parse and interpret the STREAMS file and from that make
decisions about what NBU ought to be doing (or should have done). When I posted
one of these utilities, I got called by engineering in short order asking that
I not post such things because the results can be misinterpreted and are often
specific to particular versions of NBU. All that said, I would not
encourage deleting pempersist or STREAMS without the guidance of a Symantec
engineer--if NBU is busted to the point of needing to do something like that,
then we need to be helping Symantec to gather the data so that they can fix it.

No, you are better of shutting down netbackup, deleting it,
and starting it again, it should then run the other jobs.
No experience with the stream file but I'm sure someone else
on here can comment on it. Ie Ed, Curtis etc
I'm
sorry if this has been already discussed in the past but can somebody explain
to me how netbackup uses the pempersist file.
Recently
I had problems with backups not excuting when they became due -- the solution
symantec/veritas gave me was to remove the 'pempersist' file in ./db/jobs/ and
also a 'streams' file in .db/images/<client>/
Should
I be checking this pempersist file every day and run any jobs that appear in
it?
Thanks
